2018 NDAA Section 1062

"SEC. 1062. REPORT ON ARMY PLAN TO IMPROVE OPERATIONAL UNIT READINESS BY REDUCING NUMBER OF NON-DEPLOYABLE SOLDIERS ASSIGNED TO OPERATIONAL UNITS.

Not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of the Army shall submit to the congressional defense committees a report on the plans of the Army to improve operational unit readiness in the Army by reducing the number of non-deployable soldiers assigned to operational units of the Army and replacing such soldiers with soldiers capable of world-wide deployment."

The only notable part of this section is my concern as to how it may impact non-deployable Soldiers and their processing through either the DES or separation. My instinct is that this section and the report may impact processing (and, potentially, processing times) for injured or disabled Soldiers.

Not sure yet how this may impact DES processing or the timing of actions. However, I can see an impact in the future as this section is implemented.

I'm more than a little concerned that operational units maintains no responsibility for their broke members. Soldier for life? Maybe not.

Gents. as of Feb 14 2018 The Under Secretary of Defense has posted a "DoD Retention Policy for Non-Deployable Service Members" memo for all forces. It reads that if a Service Member is non-deployable for 12 consecutive months for any reason, will be processed for administrative separation in accordance with Dodi's 1332.14 and 1332.30 or referred to DES IAW Dodi1332.18. Minus pregnant and post-partum SM's. There of course are waivers for those past the 12 months.
