Question for the group. I know 30% is the magic number when it comes to DOD ratings. I have three referred conditions: lower back pain, TBI, and Sleep Apnea(w/CPAP). Sleep Apnea is rated at 50% alone when using a CPAP machine, therefore should I not worry about not making the magic 30%? I feel confident I will get 30% it's the three added together but just curious if the sleep apnea alone will get me there. I would help with some anxiety is having. Thanks everyone.
Yes sleep apnea is 50% but there is a catch. The AF would have to find that you are "unfit" for duty because of the sleep apnea. From what I understand most of the services always say sleep apnea is "fitting" now.
So the fight is to get as many "unfitting" conditions as possible and for them to get rated at the highest percentages possible so that you end up with the most comfy retirement possible.
How to do that? Idk... It depends on your other conditions. Look them up in the VASRD or on military disability made easy dot com

It is very unlikely that the AF will find you unfit for OSA. Yes, it is a severe condition that the VA rates at 50%, however the Air Force will allow you to serve if you are prescribed a CPAP (which is the requirement for the 50% rating).
TBI and lower back pain may both be unfitting conditions, it will really come down to how each of those conditions affect your ability to do your job.
If you have had your C&P evaluations, I can look at the results and let you know what the probable rating is going to be.

I understand that but I've personally seen 3 cases recently where the VA rated them less than 50% and they all used CPAP machines. Nothing is official but the paradigm seems to actually be shifting on this.

I don't doubt that. I'm not saying it's the new standard. I'm saying I've seen on FB posts, vets who were recently rated by the VA, receiving less than 50% with a CPAP. It was only 3 cases but my point being that it may change sooner than people think.
So, even though this was a refered condition it may still be found Fit? Speaking with my VA rep, he said it's rated at 50%. He did say there is talks to reduce it, but that's not an easy task and will take time. Anyone already rated should be grandfathered in at their higher rate.
There is an upcoming 2016 or 2017 VASRD change/review that will most likely reduce it. What that means For those of us that already have the 50% rating for it I don't know... But expect it t be found "fitting" and try with all of your strength to be found unfit for other conditions.
Hi all. I just read through this posting and I looked up some changes. There was a ACDC meeting Dec 6 and 7 in DC. There are right now 6 new updates to the VASRD with another 7 to 8 being updated. Also this is the site that came up when I did the initial search but then looking around clicking onto the actual updated conditions is where I seen the updates for the first 6 conditions they are updating. It's a good read and if you read through the ACDC's meeting minutes that Chairman Martin hosted you'll see it's crazy if they ever really made a decision on anything. It's a public meeting in DC by the way and they do include some VSO's and I seen where some folks from WWP (Wounded Warrior Project) had some folks there as well.
