I know I can apply for SSDI before I get out but what date should I use for the date ended gainful employment? The date my profile went into effect? The date I received my proposed ratings?

In my case, SSDI used the date my spouse died when I was sent out from IRAQ on Emergency Leave to attend to this sudden and unexpected event.

I have read other posts where the date used by SSDI was the day the SM got transferred to a WTU or the date the SM was MedEvac'ed from the theater.

What SSDI is looking for is the date you were no longer performing the duties of your MOS. Being transferred to a WTU and the date of transfer on your order is a good one if you don't have any other specific date prior to that where you were not performing your MOS.

You can file for SSDI and eventually get approved for SSDI while on AD orders. Just be sure to go to a CPA or tax person BEFORE you spend that SSDI retro check money as it will be taxed if you have "working wages" over 1,000 per month or so. And all AD wages do count as taxable income earned - even if in a WTU.

I'm so sorry for your loss and thank you for the information. I ended up using the date my profile was put into effect. I guess I will see if that works

I hope others will chime in here and write what date they used for their onset when they applied for SSDI.

I know this date can vary from situation to situation. In my case, the SSDI "judge" used the date of spousal death, which occurred two months prior to my transfer to a WTU. The death date was a better date and awarded me two months additional SSDI retro pay benefits.

I take it you are not in a WTU?

I'm AF and I don't think we have WTU

The AF has a WW program its just not as robust as the USA/USMC program. They call me about once a month and make sure the transition is going well. Obviously, if something goes off track, I can call them sooner.

The day your relieved of your usual duties is the day you should put on your SSDI application.

Best wishes
Mike

I agree with all of the above. Another point of reference would be the date you were put on a Physical Profile.
