Fort Lewis PEB

VA internally had a discourse on going back and forth between the two ratings.

Just signed up DA199 yesterday after counseling session with PEBLO. 30% DoD/40% VA. Some of you may have heard that I got a call on Monday asking me to come in to sign erroneously because my file had become stuck in someone else's. Evidently this was bad and they put my case next in line to be finished and it was done later that day.

See! I told you!

Has anyone called the PEB at Lewis to see what is going on with their case. Mine is at 5 weeks now, I have found there number on the HRC website. Wasn't sure if you get in trouble for contacting them directly outside of your PEBLO or if they even talk to you?

You wont get in trouble per se, but their job is not customer service and talking to Soldiers. Most likely you will be told to talk to you PEBLO and work through them.

This pretty much sums up the responses I've seen posted here for the last year and a half that I've been running around on these boards.

MY ebenefits says ( PENDING DECISION APPROVAL) as of JUNE 13,2012... I called the VA July 3,2012 and they informed me my ratings where approved and sent back to the P.E.B, I asked my P.E.B.L.O why it went back to the p.e.b and she said " They go over the VA rating and compare them to their ratings " my peblo said it wouldnt be much longer, I called her again july 17th 2012 and asked what the h#$% was the hold up. she fowarded me a email from the peb stating i would have all of my ratings by july 25th, 2012. favorite thing to say is " NOT that much longer" So i for one do not listen to a thing the peblo says.

Mad101,

Sometimes the best timeline guesses come from other members going through the phases. My packet was sent back to the VA 4 weeks ago, and the PEB logged it into their system 2 weeks ago. Like several other guys in the same timeframe, I am also waiting on the 199 and will update when presented with it.

It's not the fact that your PEBLO is worthless, at this point they are waiting just like you. Once it goes back to the PEB they review it, make any adjustments, then send it to the 199 writer, then the writer sends it to the PEBLO, who then reviews it and then calls you. The PEBLO has no idea what the status is once it leaves the PEB to get written, they get a "suprise" like you do when you get your call.

This is actually very good information for any one else reading. Its not that your PEBLOs are trying to be clueless or lazy. They actually have very little visibility into the process outside of what they are specifically tasked to do, and we as "clients" tend to be able to find out more about the process than they can.

The problem comes in when the entire process is about as clear as mud and the PEBLO is the only person that we are told to deal with.

For M_A_D101, it looks like you don't have a full understanding of the process - ratings have to go back to the PEB once the VA is done with them, as the PEB then can finalize your case and issue you your DA199. I dont blame you for not knowing what's going on, the whole process if jacked up from top to bottom from a communications point of view.

Makes me want to stand in front of the people running this and ask them if they ever heard of the NCO creed - specifically keeping people informed. It might do wonders if they adopted a version of it, but I digress...

That would cost too much money and time... It would probably cost them about 2 million dollars to pay some educated guy that has never been in the military to do some motto that they wouldn't even follow. Besides all of the printing costs of posters and training events (which would take time away from our brothers and sisters.)

Think about it the first Army Strong commercial put out was at a cost of 10 million dollars and over 2 years. There are a few of us out there that could have done a better job by using PowerPoint and some editing on some video programs.

I say bad idea!

I agree. And knowing the military/civilian system, it would only be used as a smoke-screen or PR ruse to the general public and not really improve anything - just aid to further thicken the air with more smoke they can pound around.

After all, "Work Sets You Free", was a motto used at one point in history, in one particular place in time. And we all know what happened to millions of people under that twisted motto. Yep. They were all free to go up the chimney!

This is my 2nd PEBLO the first one i had was great would call and check on me and let me know if anything changed. This one on the other hand.. I will call and ask and she does not remember who i am or where my case is.. until i explain it. I am sure their are some peblo's out there who like their job and want to help. I think i am getting the short end of the stick on this one. She fowarded me a letter and it said i would have my 199 NLT then weds i called her today to see if anything came in, she checked her emails and replied "did you not get the email i sent you?, it states you will recieve something after weds. please dont call until after weds" I was dumb founded and had to get off the phone. maybe im becoming less and less impatient.

Christ you have the fastest MEB Timeline I have ever seen...I'm going on 12 months the first week of June matter of fact I have been waiting for ratings longer than you have been in the process
Same here I am going on 18 months with the older system and the IDES combined

UPDATE:
Start PTDY on Aug 10th
Terminal leave on Aug 20th
Retired on Sep 25th

It's been a long process. And I have mixed feelings about getting out. If anyone has questions please ask and I'll try to help because I'm still trying to figure out certain benefits.

Dear Bigfoot:

There is some good info to read in the Transition forums on this website from recent SMs (myself included) who have discharged and are beginning their transition process with the VA, DFAS retirement pay, etc.

Reading some of those postings can give you a "heads up" so you can be prepared with the correct documents, etc.

Also, the va.gov website has good intel, too.

1-800-827-1000 is the toll-free number to the VA call Center. Your best bet is to call early in the morning (EST), so you don't have to be on hold for 45 minutes, waiting your turn to speak with the VA phone Rep.

Also, get signed up for "e-benefits" and "my healthy vet". Once you sign up on these two websites, they create your own account portal - complete with your personal, secure log-in and password, and you can track a few VA things from an on-line position. Beats having to burn up alot of gas and mileage on your car - unless you need to! And certain things can be done faster as it's electronic communication.

These are fairly recent change/additions to the VA system - and yes, there are still some "bugs" in the programs - and yes, there are still some things you will have to receive via "snail mail" from the VA. But they do help and are an improvement from havng to deal with "all thngs VA" the old ways.

Please share and post your post-retirement issues and anything that might be helpful for others like us who are in this phase.

Thank-you so very much for your service to our country. May the Good Lord bless and keep you safe and sane!

V/r,

I received my unfit memo July 23 and know that my packet was forwarded to VA on JULY 27. I see some quick turn arounds on VA in the postings here but my MSC said it could take up to 3 months now due to the back log. The peblos were all on a required tasker till Aug 3 so it could be even longer after all the packets come back to the Peblos. I agree that the PEBLOS are doing what they can and are like us just wondering where the packet is. Most PEBLOS if not all of them do not have direct contact with the PEB only some of the supervisors do and they do help when I contact them. They at least can tell me where my packet is. Took alot of talking and waiting but at least i have a better idea of my future in the army.

Time line

DEC 2011 referred to MEB
JAN 2012 initial MEB Visit
FEB VA visit
FEB VA Exams
MARCH 2012 MEB TECH appt
April 2012 MEB DR visit and NARSUM written
APRIL 2012 referred to the informal board of the PEB
JULY 23rd found unfit
JULY 27 referred to VA for proposed ratings
JULY 27 EBENEFITS status changed to pending decision approval

I am projecting 4-5 months left all said and done. Does that sound about right?

I think less than that, about 2-3 months. Contact your MSC at Madigan and ask them where the packet is at. They are truly the only one's that can tell you where it is at. If you are told it was already rated, expect a phone call in next few weeks. Things have sped up quite a bit on JBLM!

Meh.. who is your MSC?
